Sorrento starting point
A captivating program among the beauties of the two coasts
Strategically located between the gulfs of Naples and Salerno, Sorrento is the ideal starting point to explore the most interesting locations in the region. It is a favourite destination for international tourism due to its rich history, its culture, and the popular gastronomic traditions.
The ancient city of Pompeii, made eternal by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, one of the most known and visited archaeological sites in the world is only about twenty kilometres away. Walking through the streets of the imperial age town, passing along homes, shops, the gardens of luxurious villas, admiring the richness of the decorations and the preciousness of the mosaics, it almost seems to be frozen in time, and you will be enchanted in front of the eternal charm of history. But under the shadow of Vesuvius, for those who love archaeology, there are not only the ruins of Pompeii. The entire gulf is filled with sites of great interest, such as the villas of ancient Stabiae, today known as Castellammare di Stabia, Oplontis, with its Villa di Poppea, and then the ancient city of Herculaneum, and the underwater archaeological park of Baiae which can be visited through diving excursions or by glass-bottom boats.
On the opposite side, the Land of Mermaids overlooks the Amalfi coast, a rich crown jewel, starting with its most glamorous destination, Positano, with its white houses perched on the rock, the scented gardens, and the crystal clear sea. To vouch for its beauty, some of the most famous names have loved it in time, from Jackie Kennedy to Nureyev and Franco Zeffirelli. The name to the whole coast was given by the ancient Maritime Republic of Amalfi, a meeting point of art and culture, as demonstrated by the splendid Cathedral with its Arabian profile. A long history and a prestigious tradition, like the “bambagina”, the precious paper of Amalfi used by popes and kings for the most important documents. And still more, the flourishing town of Ravello, with its enchanted gardens that bewitched Wagner. Now known as a city of music, Ravello celebrates the great German composer with a festival that has become one of the most anticipated events of the Amalfi Coast.
Two coast, two histories, two close worlds, connected by a strip of land crossed by paths and lanes. Trekking lovers call it the Path of the Gods, and the view that presents itself to the hikers’ view is truly breath-taking, from Praiano to Punta Campanella, while the islands of Capri and Li Galli emerge in the cobalt expanse of the sea.
